“There is nothing to do on campus! I’m sooo bored! I don’t know anyone!”
These are things students say far too often, but little do they know there’s plenty of opportunities to change this.
My name is Val Davids and I have the best job on campus! I oversee the Student Activities Board and Student Organizations. I work with some of the most amazing students on this campus!
There are endless ways to get involved such as joining a club or attending an event. Associated Students of Idaho State University (ASISU) funds over 150 clubs on campus. There are professional clubs pertaining to your degree, sports clubs, hobby clubs, religious organizations and much more! Just about every interest has a club on campus. For example, if you are interested in Latin or belly dancing, there’s a club of fellow belly dancing enthusiasts.
Regardless of what you want to try, there’s something for you here at Idaho State University! If you want to experience different foods and traditions from other countries, check out the cultural nights. If you want to expand your family on campus, then explore our Greek fraternities and sororities.
There will be an Involvement Fair the first Wednesday of school on the Quad, this is where you can come checkout the clubs, listen to a live band, and have some free food.
So maybe you are still a little nervous about fully committing, why not then attend an event with a couple of your new friends? The Student Activities Board (SAB) and the Union Programming Council (UPC) offer a variety of monthly events. Want to increase your ISU clothing? Many of the events will be giving away ISU t-shirts to the first 100 attendees.
Participate in Bengal Wednesday by wearing orange and you will receive more free stuff! SAB will be giving out t-shirts the first Wednesday each month. All you need to do is wear an ISU t-shirt!
Here are just a few of the exciting SAB events planned:
Paint Party on August 27 from 7pm to 10:30pm on the Quad. Dancing, loud music, and paint being sprayed, need I say anything more.
Monthly Bingos, but be warned, this is not your grandma’s Bingo!
Murder Mystery Dinner on October 20. This is a great interactive event!
Laser Tag on November 8 at Campus Recreation.
Many of you probably participated in your high school’s Homecoming, well now it is time to kick it up a few notches. This year’s Homecoming (9/19 thru 9/24) is going to be totally PHAT! Starting the week off will be a Street Dance, Quidditch on Cadet Field, Bonfire and music at Holt Arena, Royalty Pageant, Rendezvous Take Over, True Bengal, and ending with the week with the Homecoming parade, tailgates, and game.
Last but not least, is our amazing Bengal Movie Theater. All movies are free and the concessions are the best and cheapest in town. We have the friendliest staff, so I may be a little bias, but they are an awesome crew.
I have only listed a few of the fantastic events and ways to get involved. The one thing I always hear students say is “I wish I would have gotten involved when I was a Freshman.” Dr. Seuss said “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.” They say hindsight is 20/20 and that’s because as you go through life it becomes clear what moments shape your life and which ones don’t. My advice to you is make the most of your moments here at ISU.
Come sign up for a club or pick up your movie and activity calendars in the Involvement Center, located on the first floor of the Student Union.
